Summary: Se practicaron defoliaciones de 20, 40, 60 y 80 por ciento en frijol var. Turrialba I, para semejar el tipo de dano causado por las tortuguillas (Diphaulaca wagneri). Se utilizo una perforadora manual de un solo hoyo circular de 0.59 cm de diametro y se repitio la defoliacion 3 veces antes de la floracion. El expt. se realizo en Guatemala (Guatemala) a 1500 m.s.n.m. en julio-sept. de 1978 y en Managua (Nicaragua) a 800 m.s.n.m. en oct.-dic. de 1979. Los resultados de ambos lugares indican que esta var. de frijol tolera ente el 40-60 por ciento de defoliacion sin perdida de produccion. La produccion de las plantas con 20 por ciento de defoliacion fue mayor que la de las plantas no defoliadas debido probablemente al crecimiento mas rapido de las plantas despues de la defoliacion. Los adultos de D. wagneri consumieron 0.17 mas o menos 0.013 cm2 de hoja de frijol/dia, independientemente del no. de individuos/planta o no. de dias en el expt. Con base en los resultados de ambos expt., se calculo el no. de insectos que defoliarian hasta el porcentaje min. que afecta la produccion. Esto forma parte de la base para estimar el nivel economico de dano de la plaga, el cual indica la relacion entre el valor de la produccion lograda y el costo del control invertido. Plant yield with 20 percent defoliation was greater than that of non-defoliated plants, probably due to the increased growth after defoliation. Adult D. wagneri fed on bean leaves at 0.17 plus or minus 0.013 cm2/day regardless of the no. of insects/plant or the no. of days the expt. lasted. The no. of insects that defoliate up to the min. percentage needed to reduce yields was calculated on the basis of the results obtained in both expt.
