The cropping systems in use by the peasant farmers in the Southeastern region of Nigeria have been briefly reviewed. A basic traditional rotational cropping system with a 2-year arable phase, followed by one or more years of natural bush fallow, is postulated. In this part of Nigeria, which lies in the rain forest zone, tuberous root crops dominate the cropping systems; all other crops, grains and vegetables occupy a secondary position. Because of a combination of several factors, the immutability of the traditional arable rotation has been challenged and numerous variants have been developed and are in use in the different agricultural zones of the region.
