(CIAT)Summary: Basic research on cassava up to date, crop evolution, and technological development in Brazil are described. The advantages of cassava cultivation are included along with its alternatives for small-, intermediate-, and large-scale plantings. Major cultivation problems in Brazil are discussed: cropping system, production and commercialization system, adaptation to different ecosystems, low fertility soils, soil management and conservation, diseases [Xanthomonas campestris pv. manihotis, Colletotrichum (Glomerella) manihotis, Sphaceloma (Elsinoe) manihoticola, the mycoplasma causing witches' broom, Cercospora spp., Uromyces spp., and various, causal pathogens of root rots - potential diseases such as the African mosaic and frog skin are also discussed], pests (mites, Erinnyis ello, shoot flies, scale insects, and stemborers), and industrial wastes (especially from fuel alcohol production). Recommended technologies for cassava cultivation in Brazil are described; the selection of cv., the selection and preparation of planting material, cutting size, mechanized soil preparation, planting times, planting systems, planting distances and depth, fertilization, weed control, intercropping, crop rotation, irrigation, and harvesting are included. The current levels of technology are discussed and alternate systems of technology are given with their corresponding technical coefficients. The production of cuttings for planting is discussed, as well as the use of stems for multiplication, as forage and as fuel. (CIAT)
