(CIAT)
The objectives and methodology of breeding climbing beans were examined in a field of intensive competition with maize. climbing bean var. can be divided into 3 categories: type 4b, a vigorous climber, more than 2 m high, little branching and pod bearing on the upper part of the plant; 4a, climber 1.5-2.0 m high with little branching and pod bearing along the whole length of the plant; type 3b, a facultative climber less than 1.5 m high with little branching and pod bearing on the lower part of the plant. Type 4b is the best for associations with tall maize; type 4a for relay systems with maize and in monoculture when there is a strong support and 3b, in case of a low or poor support, Monoculture is the best system of individual selection, A strategy for selecting climbing beans is given along with the yields of 10 var. of climbing beans in monoculture and in association with 3 var. of maize.
