(RA)
A study was conducted to determine the presence of bacterial blight of bean in different localities of the states of Aragua (Cagua, Maracay, and Villa de Cura), Anzoategui (El Tigre), Carabobo (Güigüe), and Yaracuy (Guarabao) in Venezuela. Thirty-five samples of bean plants suspected of being attacked by the disease were collected, from which 22 isolates of the bacteria were obtained. Disease incidence varied from one locality to another, but the disease was present in all the localities sampled. The bacterial isolates were studied individually through pathogenicity tests, studies of cultural characteristics, biochemical tests, and observations with the electron microscope. All the tests performed agreed with data reported for the bacteria Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli. In isolates from Maracay and El Tigre, the variant fuscans was found, described for the 1st time in the country. This variant is characterized by the production of a brown coloration in culture media. (AS)
