The trial was conducted at Departamento de Zootecnia - UFSM, Santa Maria - RS, during the winter and spring of 1991. The finishing of beef steers was evaluated through the use of the following anual winter pastures: Tl - Oats (Avena strigosa Schreb) + common vetch (Vicia sativa L.); T2 - Oats + 100 kg/ha of nitrogen (N); T3 - Oats + italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) + vetch. Grazing pressure (GP) was 11 percent and total dry matter (DM) production/ha was, respectively, 3745, 4544 and 4400 kg. In vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) was similar for Tl (65 percent) and T3 (64 percent) and both were higher than for T2 (58 percent). Average daily gain was similar for the tree treatments, with an overall average daily gain of 1.3 kg. Liveweight gain/ha was, respectively, 212, 273 and 274 kg, for Tl, T3 and T2, respectively.
