Las caracteristicas del hongo que causa superalargamiento de la yuca en Costa Rica (Sphaceloma sp.) fueron similares a las descritas en otras partes. Los medios de cultivo preparados con hojas de yuca-dextrosa, papa-dextrosa y Czapeck tuvieron un buen crecimiento del hongo. Las colonias presentaron un color especifico, de acuerdo con el medio en que se desarrollaron. La optima temperatura de crecimiento oscilo entre 25-29 grados centigrados y la mayor acumulacion de peso seco ocurrio a un pH de 5. Bajo condiciones de luz artificial, se obtuvo un buen desarrollo de la colonia a 475-700 nm. The morphological characteristics of the fungus causing superelongation of cassava in Costa Rica (Sphaceloma sp.) were similar to those described else where. Culture media prepared with cassava leaves-dextrose, potato dextrose, and Czapeck supported good growth. Colonies had a specific color according to the medium on which they developed. Optimum growth temperature was between 25- 29 degrees Celsius, and highest dry wt accumulation occurred at a pH of 5. Under artificial illumination, adequate colony development was obtained at 473-700 nm.
