(RA-CIAT)Summary: The interactions of thirty four maize genotypes and three bush bean genotypes in relay, row intercropping and sole cropping were studied at two sites in Costa Rica. The maize genotypes were divided into six groups according to their LAI and plant height, to identify a few representative genotypes for future studies of mixed cropping. There was an interaction of maize genotype x cropping system. At a site with a severe weed problem, maize genotypes of 1.75-2.25 m and LAI greater than 2.4 allowed more bean yield in relay but less in row intercropping than the other groups. However, maize taller than 2.25 m, with high LAI, allowed as much yield of row intercropped beans as short, less leafy maize. The differences were partly explained by shading of intercropped beans and shading of the weeds which interfered with the following relay crop. At the other site, maize morphological groups did not differ in their effect on relay or intercropped beans. Relative bean performance in each system was different at each site. Through comparison with other reports, it is concluded that leafy maize genotypes of medium height are preferible for relay of beans at physiological maturity if weeds are a problem and for sole cropping. Less leafy maize types are preferible for bean intercropping or relay before physiological maturity. (AS)
