(RA-CIAT) spa
The effect of pruning and the length of time during which cassava roots were kept in the soil on root conservation and quality was determined in Lavras, Brazil, on a dark red Latosol. A randomized block design with split- plots and 4 replications was used. The plots consisted of the interaction cv. (Mantiqueira and IAC 12-829) x harvesting time (0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after pruning) and the subplots contained the treatments nonpruned and pruned plants. Pruning was carried out 12 mo. after planting. The level of physiological deterioration of the roots was reduced when aerial parts were pruned up to 28 days before harvesting, these effects being more pronounced when pruning was performed 21 and 28 days before harvest. Regardless of pruning, the permanence of the roots in the soil reduced the level of physiological deterioration of the roots. Pruning did not affect the levels of crude fiber but increased cooking time and total sugar content and decreased root starch levels. (AS) eng
